Brutto/Moioli and Berg/Schad triumph in team SBX event
Raffaella Brutto and Michela Moioli (ITA) as well as Paul Berg and Konstantin Schad (GER) have clinched the season's first team snowboard cross race of the FIS Snowboard World Cup which was staged in Montafon, Austria, today.
Both teams, ITA 1 and GER 1, also took over the lead in the newly introduced Team SBX World Cup ranking.
The two Italian racers relegated Americans Lindsey Jacobellis and Callan Chythlook-Sifsof as well as Chloe Trespeuch and Nelly Moenne Loccoz of France in an enthralling women's final staged on Seebliga to the second and third spot respectively.
Moioli, a young gun who won the Sochi test event last season, stormed from fourth to first position, overtaking Chythlook-Sifsof on the last metres of the finish straight.
“I feel very good. It's a fantastic day. The course and the race were great. I was very fast and was able to race from fourth to first rank. This win is a very nice push in confidence for me,” said Moioli after he first ever win of Italian ladies in a snowboard cross team event.
On the men's side, Team GER 1 also secured the first ever German win and also the first ever podium result for their home country in a team SBX event.
22-year old talent Berg missed the start a bit but was able to fight back from third to second passing his Italian rival Matteotti in one of the four banks.
“Konsti (Schad) rode perfectly and brought home victory,” said the rider from Konstanz.
His team mate threw in all he had and was able to catch up leading Jake Holden before setting the final manoeuver to take over the lead.
“It wasn't easy. I just went for it, all or nothing. No doubt about it. We were so motivated yesterday already but got so unlucky. Winning this one feels great and is a nice redemption for yesterday,” explained Schad who was eliminated in yesterday's single race in the quarter finals, just like his German countrymen.
However, the disappointing race was quickly forgotten, Berg added: “I feel great. There is nothing better than winning my first appearance in a World Cup final.”
Kevin Hill and Jake Holden (CAN) as well as Luca Matteotti and Michele Godino (ITA) rounded out the podium as second and third team respectively
The next snowboard cross event, a single race, will take place in Lake Louise, Canada, December 20 and 21.
