World Cup season wraps up with snowboard cross in La Molina
La Molina, Spain will host the 2015 FIS Snowboard World Cup's last competition with this season's third and last snowboard cross race. As the sbx World Cup tour concluding once again in the winter sport resort in the Pyrenees on March 21st (finals staged at 12:15 PM CET) a long winter which kicked off things in Austria last December finally comes to an end.
With two snowboard cross events already in the books, all eyes are on Nelly Moenne Loccoz (FRA) and Lucas Eguibar (SPA) who will enter the final showdown for the crystal globe as World Cup leaders.
Moenne Loccoz, a 24-year-old two-time world championships runner-up with silver medals earned last January in Kreischberg, Austria and four years ago in La Molina, sits on the top spot of the women's ranking with 1,600 earned for her back-to-back second rank finishes in Veysonnaz, Switzerland last weekend.
Eguibar has accumulated 1,800 with a runner-up finish and his career's first World Cup win at the SBX season's opener.
However, both have to face some strong competition in the race for the crystal globe.
Moenne Loccoz is only 100 points ahead of last year's La Molina winner and the defending World Cup champion Dominique Maltais (CAN) who is up for her career's sixth title in her last season on tour. It would be her fifth consecutive one.
In addition, Michela Moioli (ITA, 1,450) and 2015 Olympic bronze medallist Chloe Trespeuch (FRA, 1,400) are both also looking very strong.
In the men's ranking, Eguibar has a pretty comfortable lead of 600 over Kevin Hill (CAN, 1,200) but the 21-year-old 2013 junior world champion has to have some more riders on the list.
One of them is Nikolay Olyunin (RUS, 1,160) who finished second last year in La Molina. The other one is Alex Pullin (AUS, 1,100) who knows how to win a crystal globe in the last event (2011).
