The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, officially the XXII Olympic Winter Games, or the 22nd Winter Olympics, are scheduled to take place from 7th-23rd February 2014. 98 events in 15 sports will be held of which 49 are carried out in the FIS Olympic disciplines.
The Games will be organised in two clusters: a coastal cluster for ice events in Sochi, and a mountain cluster located in the Krasnaya Polyana Mountains. The mountain cluster is home to all the FIS sports in addition to sliding sports. The concept is a very compact one with only an average distance of 4km between the mountain sub-village and the venues. There is also be a sub-media centre in the mountain cluster.
Sochi was selected as the host city in July 2007, during the 119th IOC Session held in Guatemala City. The 2014 Winter Olympics will be the first time that the Russian Federation will have hosted the Winter Games; the Soviet Union hosted the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow. Sochi has a population of 400,000 people and is situated in Krasnodar, which is the third largest region in Russia.
