Blouin and Grégoire win the junior slopestyle nationals

Kirsty Macdonald from Banff, Alta. and Darcy Sharpe (photo) from Comox, B.C. prevailed yesterday at the 2013 edition of the Sport Chek Snow Crown – The Canadian Snowboard Freestyle Championships presented by Sony claiming the top spots.

Macdonald was the strongest women yesterday sending it big on the jumps and was really technical on the rail with a backside 360 out of the canon rail. Joining Macdonald on the podium, Thursday’s junior slopestyle winner Laurie Blouin from Stoneham, Que. stepped once again on the podium this time on the second step followed by Japanese rider Fumika Hoshino in third.

Sharpe who was one of the riders to beat, showed he was on top of his game putting down the best run of the day awarding him a 96.00, the highest of the day. Tyler Nicholson from North Bay, Ont., who recently won the 2013 FIS World Junior slopestyle Championships in Turkey, finished his day in second, followed by Rhett Haubrich from Vernon, B.C. in third.

On the junior’s front, Laurie Blouin and Michel Grégoire from Mont-Sainte-Anne, Que. came swinging at the 2013 edition of the Snow Crown at Canada Olympic Park in Calgary with the best runs of the day.

Blouin, fresh of her win at the FIS World Junior Championships in slopestyle was definitely on top of the food chain here in Calgary riding with confidence and ease. Her run consisted of an Indy, Frontside 360 and a big backside 360. Audrey McManiman stepped on the second step of the podium and also won the junior halfpipe for a second year in a row making her one of the most well rounded up and comers in Canada. Kirsty Macdonald joined the Québec duo in third on the podium.

Grégoire is one funny young man and can certainly throw it down on the slopestyle course. Linking some smooth tricks got him the lead like cab 540 to backside 1080 and a lofty frontside 720.

“I’m really happy, I haven’t got a lot of good results this year so I’m really stoked to put a good one down. It’s also a good preparation for the open slopestyle on Saturday,” said Grégoire.

William Izzard from Oakville, Ont. and Tanner Holland from Kelowna, B.C. joined Grégoire on the podium in second and third respectively.
