Outstanding level of riding in halfpipe qualifiers at Copper Mtn
A huge and deep field of some 85 men and 45 women had registered for the season's second halfpipe World Cup staged in Copper Mountain, CO.
And the riders where as good as their words.
In a perfectly shaped superpipe on Loverly course, the top dogs and hot favourites for victory took centre stage throwing some impressive runs.
On top of all was Zach Black (photo) who earned the highest score of the day (94.3) in heat #4 for a well executed run consisting of a frontside 900 to backside 720, switch backside 900, haakon flip and a frontside 1080 to finish things off.
Black's team mate of US Snowboarding Scotty Lago was the second US boy to win his heat (90).
The 2010 Olympic Bronze medallist impressed with a frontside 900 cork to backside 900 cork, frontside 1080 double cork, cab 720, frontside 540 and a stylish method.
The two other men's heat were won by Arthur Longo (FRA, 85.2) and Yiwei Zhang (CHN) who stepped it up in his second run with a backside air to frontside 1080 double cork, cab 1080 double cork, frontside 900 tail and backside 540 mute to tail earning 90.6 points.
On the women's side, it was once again the current super star of women snowboarding playing her game.
2002 Olympic Gold medalist Kelly Clark dominated the field with a frontside grab to backside 540 mute, frontside 720 tail, cab 720 mute and frontside 540 mute earning the top score of 94.6 points.
In the other heat, young gun Arielle Gold fired done a backside air to frontside 900 indy, backside 540 mute, frontside 720 indy, cab 720 indy and frontside 540 lien to take the top seat in heat.
All top qualifiers of their heats will face some strong competition coming from the US, Australia, Spain, Japan, Finland, China and Switzerland on Saturday when the finals kick off at 9:30 AM local time.
