Penultimate slopestyle, parallel giant slalom and snowboard cross World Cup events
The FIS Snowboard World Cup hits the home stretch next weekend featuring the penultimate competitions in the slopestyle, parallel giant slalom and snowboard cross events staged in three different countries on Saturday, March 16.
Splinderuv Mlyn, Czech Republic, one out of five new World Cup hosts this season, will host this winter's second slopestyle contest after the event scheduled for Sochi had to be cancelled a few weeks ago due to warm weather conditions.
As a result, the World Cup debut of the Czech ski resort is – after Copper, CO, and the World Champs in Stoneham, QC – even more important to the deep and strong international field of freestyle riders entering as it is the third competition of the Olympic qualifying process for Sochi 2014 which will end on January 31, 2014.
While the world's best slopestyle athletes will meet in the Giant Mountains, the race boarders come together in the Pyrenees to compete on the very steep World Cup hill in La Molina, Spain, in this season's penultimate parallel giant slalom.
The race guarantees some enthralling moments as the battle for the small and big Crystal Globes are tight on both sides, women and men.
While Patrizia Kummer (SUI) and Caroline Calvé (CAN) currently seem to call the shots in both women's rankings, it looks like Andreas Prommegger (AUT) and Roland Fischnaller (ITA) repeat their last year's private duel for the title.
PGS World Cup Ranking Women
On the snowboard cross side, the race for the title is not as close. Before the sixth and thus penultimate event will take place in Veysonnaz, Switzerland, on Saturday, March 16, Dominique Maltais (CAN) and Alex Pulling (AUS) are quite comfortable in the lead.
If everything works out fine for the defending World Cup Champion from Canada and the reigning World Champion from Australia, the two racers could make a huge step towards their career's fourth and second title respectively in the 4 Vallées ski area.
On Sunday, March 17, the Wallis' SBX fanswill also get a special bonus when the season's third Team SBX event goes down.
