Alpine Skiing: Focus on super combined, city event

The Alpine Skiing Technical Committee meetings in Zurich focused on confirming the final calendars for the upcoming 2012/13 season. Related to that, two major topics of discussion were super combined and the city event as part of the Audi FIS Ski World Cup. Across all levels, the FIS decision-making bodies reaffirmed their support for positioning the super combined events on the World Cup calendar as real highlights, with an average of two competitions for both ladies and men. In the coming season, the traditional Kitzbühel (AUT) combined where the winner is determined by adding the results of the downhill and slalom will still remain and for the future, discussions are underway to combine Friday’s super-G in Kitzbühel with a night slalom run to decide the Kitzbühel super combined winner. In the 2012/13 season, the men will have a super combined in Wengen (SUI), whilst the ladies will compete in super combined at top events in St Moritz (SUI) and Meribel (FRA).

For the City Event, the Alpine Committee is proposing to the Council a modification to base the ranking of the qualified 16 competitors (ladies / men) mostly on the World Cup Starting List for slalom (those ranked 1-12) in addition to the top four in the overall World Cup Starting List. The host nation may apply for a wild card if they have no athletes within these two rankings.

Moreover, in light of the new equipment rules in effect from the coming season, a clarification to the three-point measurement criteria to determine the effective radius of the skis was unanimously agreed. The measuring method will then reflect the undistorted and continuously curved radius, without any turning points in between the two measuring points located at the tip and the tail.

Finally free internet access for the athletes, team members and service staff was included in the World Cup rules as part of the list of services to be provided by the Organisers.

The FIS Council will have its Meeting on 3rd-4th November at the FIS Office in Oberhofen (SUI).
