Czechs, Germans win FIS SnowKidz Award 2012
The winners of the FIS SnowKidz Award 2012 were announced at the FIS Congress on Wednesday 30th May: After much deliberation, there was no way of telling who was better, which meant that the Jury decided that the Czech Republic and Germany tied for the first place. Slovenia with their School Marathon in Pokljuka project took third.
The FIS SnowKidz Award was introduced in 2009 as part of the ‘Bring Children to the Snow' campaign. It aims to recognize and promote the best examples of bringing children to the snow in varying national circumstances. A total of 21 applications from 21 National Ski Associations were received by the deadline on 15th February. Eight applications came from Aid & Promotion developing ski nations. All applications were reviewed by the FIS SnowKidz Jury which selected the eight finalists:
• Kids on Snow (BEL)
• Snow Day Every Day (BLR)
• SnowKidz Czech Republic (CZE)
• Snow Camp (GBR)
• DSV Schoolsport Concept (GER)
• Five Days of Snow and Fun (PAK)
• School Marathon in Pokljuka (SLO)
• Everyone on Snow (SWE)
Thanks are expressed to the jury which consisted of Satu Kalajainen (FIN), representing the FIS Youth & Children's' Coordination Group, Antoine Goetschy, the head of the Youth Olympic Games at the IOC, and Riet R Campell (SUI), President of International Ski Instructors' Association, for their great contributions and expertise in evaluating these projects.
Satu Kalajainen was delighted about the evolution of the FIS SnowKidz Award and the large variety of candidatures received: "I was overwhelmed by the number of projects put in place during the short life-cycle of the SnowKidz Award initiative and feel privileged to develop further insight into the project. In general, we have seen an increase in events combining various FIS disciplines offering more opportunities for children to get involved in snow sports. I would also like to encourage the member National Ski Associations to cooperate and share best practices about their initiatives currently in place!"
