Fiemme 2013 has come to an end

The FIS Nordic World Ski Champonships in Val di Fiemme (ITA) ended on Sunday, 3rd March, with the 50 km Cross-Country men’s mass-start competition in classical technique which crowned Sweden’s Johan Olsson as World Champion after an impressive solo ski for nearly 40km.

Throughout 12 days, the population of Trentino and Nordic skiing fans around the world saw exhilarating action in all 21 medal events across the disciplines of Cross-Country Skiing, Ski Jumping and Nordic Combined.

While Norway clearly dominated the Cross-Country competitions by winning an outstanding total of 16 medals (7 gold, 4 silver, 5 bronze), Austria led the Ski Jumping rankings with 4 medals (1 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze), and France triumphed in Nordic Combined (3 gold, 1 bronze).

Some of the shining stars in the second competition week were Norway’s Marit Bjoergen who won a total of four gold medals in ladies’ Cross-Country, thus increasing her number of career World Championship gold medals to twelve; France’s Jason Lamy-Chappuis, who became a triple World Champion in Nordic Combined and also won a bronze, and Kamil Stoch (POL) who followed in his legendary countryman Adam Malyzs’ footsteps and scored a gold in Ski Jumping 10 years after his compatriot on the same hill.

The Fair Play award of Pentathlon which recognised the person or team demonstrating a unique act of fair play was presented to the Ski Jumping team of Norway composed of Andreas Stjernen, Tom Hilde, Anders Bardal and Anders Jacobsen. Following a human error in the final results of the Ski Jumping team competition on the large hill, the team from Norway that initially was ranked 2nd and later placed in 4th place demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and accepted that team Germany won the silver medal and Poland completed the podium ahead of them.

The closing ceremony on 3rd March featured musical acts and a parade of volunteers representing all countries that had competed in the World Championships. In conclusion, the FIS flag was officially passed on by FIS President Gian Franco Kasper from the Fiemme 2013 Organisers to the Falun 2015 team which will host the next edition of the FIS Nordic Word Ski Championships in the heart of Sweden in two years’ time.
