Ilka Stuhec receives Matteo Baumgarten Award

Ilka Stuhec receives Matteo Baumgarten Award

For the last 17 years, the International Matteo Baumgarten Award has been an event of distinction and humility. In 1996, the Baumgarten family suffered the tragic loss of their son Matteo Baumgarten in a car crash. He had shown great promise as future World Cup Alpine skier and balanced his strong training regime with a determination to succeed in his education and studies.

The loss of such a promising athlete and beloved son motivated the Baumgarten family to remember their son by recognising those who share his life’s path. The International Matteo Baumgarten Award recognises a young Alpine Skiing athlete who seeks to achieve great success not only in his/her sport but also in education.

This year, the 17th edition of the award saw 15 nominations submitted from eight National Ski Associations. Each nominee was required to submit their FIS results as well as a transcript of their academic studies. Nominees also extended their nominations by submitting images of their events as well as documents expressing their drive to enter in the award. After careful analysis by the Baumgarten family, five top candidates were selected. These dossiers were reviewed for the second time and in the end, Ilka Stuhec from Slovenia was chosen as the winner.

Ilka will be presented the award in Italy on 7th April at a meeting of the Lions Club of Bormio in front of many dignitaries and prominent personalities. Ilka also joins a long series of Alpine Skiing champions including Tina Maze (SLO) and Tanja Poutiainen (FIN) who have managed the demanding lifestyle of elite competition and study.

The Baumgarten family would like to warmly thank all the National Ski Associations and the nominees for participating in this year’s award.
