GAP 2011 moving ahead with less than 500 days to go Garmisch-Partenkirchen (GER), the organizer of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2011, together with the German Ski Association, hosted the representatives of FIS, the host broadcaster ZDF/ARD, EBU and its marketing partner Tridem, for the Autumn Coordination Group meeting in the Werdenfelser land at the foot of the Zugspitze on 12th-13th October. The meeting comprised 40 attendees who were tasked with reviewing and presenting the progress made during the last months on all aspects of event organization. The two days of discussion were characterized by an intensive exchange highlighting different perspectives and experiences from previous major events. With less than 500 days to go (479 to be exact) the organizing committee presented a number of new staff members who have recently joined the established core team bringing many new ideas into the 2011 Championships planning. A main focus has been put on defining and developing the key target groups' event experience, from the moment they make the decision to attend the event through post-event evening activities. Different spectator groups such as the fan clubs will be at the heart of a great atmosphere in 2011 and the OC plans to take good care of them. In close cooperation with the FIS Race Directors major work on slopes has been completed. The men's' and ladies' races on the Kandahar piste will share a finish area which will form a central area of the Championships while the ice stadium will conveniently serve as the organizational center, accreditation centre, race office, and the main press center. The medal ceremonies are planned to take place in the center of the town. Sarah Lewis, FIS Secretary General, commented: "The organizing committee has made the transition from the planning to operational phase. Much work has taken place over the past six months since the last meeting and the OC is making great headway with the many tasks and challenges. The championships in Garmisch will be the place to be in February 2011!" Contributed by Sarah Fussek |
