Sunny season opener in Soelden The Audi FIS Alpine Ski World Cup season opened in Soelden (AUT) last weekend, on 24th-25th October in beautiful early winter conditions. It's the 12th time since 1993 for Soelden to launch the season. The two days preceding Saturday's ladies' giant slalom saw a sleuth of press conferences and more-or-less informal meeting points, including the FIS Forum Alpinum, the annual season opening information session for the ski journalists. Action began Saturday morning with the ladies giant slalom. The start was delayed 30 minutes as piste crews completed final preparations of the Rettenbach glacier course due to 10 cm of new snow falling during Friday night. Reigning giant slalom World Cup champion Tanja Poutiainen (FIN) was victorious in the season opening race holding off Austria's Kathrin Zettel by just 0.01. The men took to the steep and challengin course on Sunday with Swiss veteran, Didier Cuche capturing the win by a sizable 0.60 over Ted Ligety of the United States and teammate Carlo Janka.
