Kowalczyk, Cologna on the way to 2nd Tour titles?
The 5th edition of the Viessmann FIS Tour de Ski performance by Craft Sportswear is again proving to be a true season highlight in Cross-Country Skiing. After five Stages, Dario Cologna (SUI) and Justyna Kowalczyk (POL) seem to be on their way to their second Tour de Ski titles.
Dario Cologna leads the men's competition after five of eight stages by 43 seconds. The Swiss Olympic champion and the Tour de Ski winner of 2009 has shown top form in all stages by finishing on the podium every time, with the exception of the prolog in Oberhof where he took 7th. Devon Kershaw of Canada, one of the most positive and constant surprises of this year's Tour, took his first World Cup stage victory and has established himself as Cologna's pursuer. The main challengers at this point seem to be Marcus Hellner (SWE) the prolog winner, Norway‘s Petter Northug, who finished 3rd in the sprint Stage in Toblach, and Alexander Legkov of Russia, who are 33 seconds, 1.02 minutes and 1.11 behind Kershaw, respectively, in 3rd, 4th and 5th places.
On the ladies' side, the lead collected by 2010 Tour champion Justyna Kowalczyk diminished to 40 seconds from 1:20 minutes in the 5th stage as Kowalczyk failed to advance from the quarterfinals of the 5th Stage sprint. In 2nd place now is the sprint stage winner from Toblach Slovenia's Petra Majdic, who gathered full 60 bonus seconds there, and leads by 30 seconds over Sweden's Charlotte Kalla and Italy's Arianna Follis in 3rd and 4th, whilst Marianna Longa (ITA) is only another 5 seconds behind them in 5th place. The 20-year-old Finn Krista Lähteenmäki is the greatest surprise on the ladies' side, including claiming her first podium finish in Oberstdorf, and she is currently ranked 6th, 1.38 behind Kowalczyk after five stages.
The 2011 Tour will continue on Thursday 6th January with the 6th Stage, which sees the second edition of the Point A-Point B handicap start race from Cortina to Toblach for the men and for the ladies a 15km race consisting of three 5km laps at the Toblach ski stadium. After the second rest day in Val di Fiemme on Friday, the Tour will conclude traditionally with a classical technique mass start including various intermediate bonus points on Saturday, and the famous Final Climb to Alpe Cermis on Sunday, 9th January 2011.
