Host nation Finland strong in moguls Junior Worlds

The 2011 FIS Freestyle Junior World Ski Championships in moguls were staged in in Jyvaskyla, Finland, last weekend.

In the individual mogul competition, Kazakhstan's Yuliya Galysheva and Finland's own Ville Miettunen were crowned the ladies' and men's junior world moguls champions on Saturday. Galysheva was hard to beat combining speed and style to clinch the victory. Russia's Marika Pertachiya headed into the finals in second behind Galysheva, but fell just short of gold to finish with a silver medal. Tereza Vaculikova of the Czech Republic took the bronze medal.

In the men's contest, host country's Miettunen landed the top spot with Great Britain's Benjamin Cavet close behind taking silver. The podium was rounded by another Finnish skier Olli Penttala with bronze.

In perfect spring-like skiing conditions, warm sunny weather and soft snow, a field masked with five o'clock goggle tan line shadows took to the course on Sunday for head-to-head dual moguls action. In the men's contest, the USA's Bryan Zemba won gold while Marika Pertachiya earned her second medal adding dual moguls gold to her collection.

The men's final saw a photo finish, with Zemba and Penttala crossing the line simultaneously with the fate of the gold medal and some serious bragging rights in the hands of the judges. In the end, one point determined the junior world dual moguls champion as Zemba claimed the crown 18-17.

In the ladies' contest, Pertachiya beat Norway's Emilie Noel Amundsen for gold. Finland's own Isabella Cedercreutz rounded out the podium with bronze.

In the Nation's Cup standings, host nation Finland won gold, while Russia took silver and the USA finished 3rd.
