FIS Alpine World Cup continues in North America
After a racing hiatus of over a month, the Audi FIS Ski World Cup continued in North-America with a sunny ladies' technical weekend in Aspen, Colorado (USA) and an exciting men's Speed Opening in Lake Louise (CAN). Unlike Europe, North America has been blessed with natural snowfall and cold temperatures enabling snow-making, providing top-notch conditions for World Cup ski racing.
The ladies were again welcomed in the Colorado Rockies by beautiful clear skies and a race course in excellent condition. The reigning World Cup giant slalom champion Viktoria Rebensburg (GER) who narrowly missed out on victory in the season opener in Sölden won the race ahead of Austria's strongly skiing Lizz Görgl and Julia Mancuso (USA), who broke the US team's bad spell by seizing their first podium in six years and her first GS podium since 2007. In the season's first slalom on Sunday, the 2011 slalom queen Marlies Schild continued her winning ways taking the race and her 30th World Cup victory in dominating fashion.
The men's first downhill saw a duel between neighbours Switzerland and Austria with 37-year-old veteran Didier Cuche claiming top spot before a young challenger from within his own team, Beat Feuz, in 2nd position. Austrians Hannes Reichelt and Romed Baumann yielded a strong challenge to the Swiss, with Reichelt racing to the podium from the back of the field with starting number 45. The super-G became a Norwegian celebration as Aksel Lund Svindal clinched the win, his 15th, followed by Didier Cuche scoring his 2nd podium of the weekend in runner up position.
The ladies' have now moved to Lake Louise for their Speed Opening whilst the men are in Beaver Creek (USA) for a three-race weekend on the challenging Birds of Prey.
Meanwhile the unusually warm autumn in Europe is continuing to wreak havoc in the World Cup calendar. Despite massive efforts to produce snow, the Big Weekend of racing in Val d'Isere (FRA) scheduled for 10th-11th December with both the ladies' and men's World Cup tours coming together had to be cancelled due to lack of snow. Thanks to many stakeholders coming together with the USSA, the men's giant slalom and slalom, and the ladies' super-G races were able to be rescheduled from Val d'Isere to Beaver Creek (USA). The men will now race on Tuesday, 6th December (GS), followed by the ladies' super-G race on Wednesday, 7th December, and the men's slalom race on Thursday 8th December.
