Kearney, Kingsbury claim overall Freestyle globes
In what can only be described as commanding performances from each athlete, American Hannah Kearney and Canadian Mikael Kingsbury have confirmed the respective ladies' and men's large crystal globes for the overall FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup 2011/12 rankings.
Kearney, the 2009 moguls title winner and 2010 Olympic champion, has had a simply incredible season. Winning every moguls and dual moguls event she has competed in save for a single 4th-place finish in Naeba, Japan in February, Kearney has arguably eclipsed fellow American, Lindsey Vonn as the most dominant athlete in any FIS discipline on the World Cup circuit. Her 16 first place finishes in a row (dating back to the 2010/11 season) broke Swedish legend Ingemar Stenmark's 32-year-old World Cup consecutive-wins record.
On the men's side, Canadian Mikael Kingsbury has graduated from being the 2009/10 FIS Freestyle World Cup “Rookie of the Year” to claim the overall title of the 2011/12 FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup. Starting the season with six consecutive wins to tie a moguls record set by the USA's Jeremy Bloom in 2005, Kingsbury has since gone on to win three more times in the last seven events while finishing no lower than 3rd place in any event.
Kearney and Kingsbury have also confirmed victory in the moguls season standings, before the World Cup finals taking place this weekend in Megeve (FRA) with dual moguls events still pending on Sunday. For Kearney it is the 3rd moguls World Cup title while 19-year-old Kingsbury clinches his first small globe.
In ski cross, the ladies’ season title went to Marielle Thompson (CAN) and the men’s to Filip Flisar (SLO). The best nation and winner of the ski cross Nation’s Cup trophy is Canada.
The aerials World Cup Finals will be held in Myrkdalen-Voss (NOR) this Saturday. Canada’s Olivier Rochon leads the men’s standings currently with a margin of 78 points over Zongyang Jia (CHN). In the ladies’ rankings, Mengtao Xu of China leads by 80 points over Olga Volkova (UKR) before the Finals which also serve as a test event for the FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships 2013 in Voss.
