Kikkan Randall: “We can affect positive change!”

Kikkan Randall: “We can affect positive change!”

Kikkan Randall is not only an ace in Cross-Country Skiing but is also an active member of the FIS Athletes’ Commission. In this interview, she talks about her role and achievements.

FIS Newsflash: You have been an active member of the FIS Athletes’ Commission. What were your initial ambitions to join the Commission?

Kikkan: “My initial ambitions for joining the FIS Athletes Commission were to better understand how the FIS organisation works, to create a better pathway of communication between the athletes and the FIS decision makers, and to help bring together the entire athlete family in all FIS disciplines.

FIS Newsflash: You are currently very successful in Cross-Country Skiing and you also represent the athletes on the Commission. Can you do both at the same time?

Kikkan: “Sometimes, it can be challenging to fit in the meetings and training at the same time.  Over the last four years however, I have learned how to make the two jobs work together. It has been very useful for me to be an athlete currently competing in all the competitions, and getting to know the athletes. As we travel together on the Tour this has allowed me to fairly represent the opinions of all athletes and not just myself.”

FIS Newsflash: What did you achieve in the past four years with regard to Cross-Country Skiing?

Kikkan: “I feel very good about the progress we've made with the Cross-Country Committee!  Sami and I have developed a network of athlete representatives from each nation so that our pathway of communication is clear and effective.  We have also developed a procedure for doing pre and post-season meetings with the athletes as well as a post-season survey, so that we can clearly identify the most important issues for the athletes.  The Cross-Country Committee has been very open to work with and has allowed the athletes to have a respected voice at the main table.  We have been able to affect several small changes and it has been seen by all how positive it can be to have the athletes involved in big decisions.”

FIS Newsflash: New elections will take place during next year’s World Championships. What are your words of wisdom for your peers to stand for election and/ or to vote?

Kikkan: “Being able to represent your fellow athletes and your sport is a great honour and a very rewarding experience.  It has been fascinating to understand all the processes, decisions and stakeholders involved in making Cross-Country Skiing and the FIS business a success.  I appreciate our sport even more now!  It may take a little time away from training but it's totally worth it.  We can affect positive change!”

In order to nominate candidates for the FIS Athletes Commission, National Ski Association should fill in the following form. Applications for the Nordic disciplines will still be accepted until 20th January 2013.
