Alpine EC titles to Depauli and Pinturault
The season's finals for the FIS European Cup in Alpine Skiing were staged in Formigal (SPA) simultaneously with the World Cup Finals in Lenzerheide (SUI). Both were challenged by difficult weather conditions which resulted in the cancellation of three ladies' competitions in the north of Spain.
"Despite the cancellations during the finals, the rest of the season took place in excellent weather and snow conditions," commented Janez Flere, Coordinator for the ladies' European Cup. "A good balance of experienced and new organizers are helping to increase the quality of the competitions every season. Of the new sites, we could mention Lelex Mont Jura (FRA) where France and Switzerland helped each other in the organization of a super-G and super combined. Test events on the Olympic downhill slope for Sochi 2014 (RUS) were also a highlight of the season." He added: "For us it was Interesting to see very young female racers (15 and 16 years old) already competing for points with athletes who have quite some experience on the Europa Cup circuit."
A total of 32 races of 39 planned events were contested in the men's EC this season while the ladies completed 33 of 37 scheduled competitions.
The ladies 2011 European Cup title went to Austria's 19-year-old Jessica Depauli who also won slalom gold at the FIS Alpine Junior World Ski Championships 2011 in Crans-Montana. Depauli dominated the overall standings with a 559 point margin over the runner-up Lisa Magdalena Agerer of Italy and 3rd-placed Veronique Hronek (GER), who trailed Agerer by 12 points. She also won the super combined and super-G titles while Agerer was best in giant slalom. Stefanie Moser (AUT) claimed the downhill crown and Fanny Chmelar (GER) the ladies' slalom title.
In the men's rankings, the clear winner was the reigning giant slalom junior world champion Alexis Pinturault who thus became the only Frenchman to claim the EC overall season title so far. Pinturault won the overall standings 371 points ahead of 22-year-old Bernhard Graf of Austria, also the super combined title winner. In his only 2nd season at this level, Pinturault, the giant slalom junior world champion for the first time in 2009, scored his first World Cup podium finishing 2nd in the Kranjska Gora giant slalom. He also took 6th in the super-G in Hinterstoder. Pinturault won the giant slalom event rankings and finished 2nd in the slalom standings. Italy's 20-year-old Giovanni Borsotti finished 3rd overall.
The European Cup slalom title went to American Nolan Kasper whilst Austrians Matthias Mayer and Manuel Kramer were best in the super-G and downhill rankings, respectively.
