FIS honored by International Skiing History Association

FIS was recognized last week with several honors from the International Ski History Association (ISHA) at its annual meeting in Sun Valley. "100 Years of International Skiing," a 256-page book chronicling the history of organizing skiing, was honored with an Ullr Award. Meanwhile, the European Broadcasting Union's "100 Years FIS" was recognized with ISHA's Film Award.

ISHA's annual awards are presented for outstanding contributions to the historical record in media including ski history books, filmmaking, television journalism and academic articles. The awards were presented by longtime editor and skiing historian John Fry from ISHA.

"100 Years of International Skiing" was written by FIS Nordic Combined Media Coordinator Egon Theiner along with retired professor and historian John Allen from New Hampshire. It details the sport's modern history including revolutionary changes in alpine racing, cross country and jumping, and the arrival of freestyle and snowboarding.
"100 Years FIS" was produced by Arthur Haechler and Roland Ruckstahl from the EBU. The 20-minute video provides an extraordinary visual documentation of some of the greatest moments in the sport's last century. It was presented as a gift by the EBU to the FIS on its centennial celebration at the 2010 FIS Congress in Antalya. The film was featured in a special showing during ISHA's annual meeting and film festival.

ISHA was founded in 1991, with its awards program debuting in 1993. ISHA has a global membership of nearly 2,000 with a mission to preserve and advance the knowledge of ski history and to increase public awareness of the sport's heritage.
