Speed Skiing World Championships coming up
Whilst the competition season for most FIS disciplines is already over, Speed Skiing racing is still in top gear and all eyes are on Verbier, Switzerland where the 2011 World Championships will take place from 18th-21st April 2011.
The man to beat in Verbier will be the three-time world champion Simone Origone from Italy who won two of the six World Cup races and placed second in the four others. On the ladies side, the World Cup globe went again to Sweden's Sanna Tidstrand who did not lower her guard throughout the season winning all six competitions this season to defend her overall World Cup title.
Speed Skiing is considered the fastest non-motorized sport in the world. There are currently approximately 2'000 active speed skiers in the world. The skiers all wear aerodynamic helmets, a full body skin tight suit made of latex, specially shaped poles and wide skis of 2.30 to 2.50 meters length. There are only a few speed skiing pistes worldwide; Les Arcs (FRA), Vars (FRA) and Verbier are among the best-known and fastest ones. In Verbier, the speed skiers will start from a special artificial ramp that extends the run.
