Eight straight years of daily skiing

Eight straight years of daily skiing

Colorado based telemark skier Rainer Hertrich completed his eighth straight year of daily skiing last Monday, 31st October. Hertrich has now skied a record of almost 29 million vertical meters during his crusade.

2,921 consecutive days of daily telemark skiing and as many vertical feet as possible arethe goal for Hertrich (50), who travels the world and chases the winter, so as to never miss a day on the hill. Besides his home mountain of Copper, Colorado, he travels to Mount Hood, Oregon (USA), and Chile to complete his 365-day season. He does a pre-dawn run at Timberline's closing day, usually around Labor Day, and flies down to Chile where he immediately seeks out the nearest ski resort.

The 29-year snowcat operator has been recognized by Guinness World Records for the most consecutive days of telemark skiing. In fact, he will officially become the record holder when he quits, yet the record book has acknowledged he will inevitably get the title.

"As long as I'm healthy and not super injured, I'm going to keep going and see where it ends up at," Hertrich said. "I've skied through some injuries, a separated shoulder, five separate rib injuries and all the associated aches and pains that come with skiing - and I don't like that very much."

Asked if he sees the streak coming to an end any time in the near future, Hertrich said he's considering the 100-million vertical-foot mark, which will likely come sometime this winter. After all, there are other things he likes to do, like water skiing.
