SportAccord 2012: Highlighting FIS events
The 10th edition of the SportAccord Convention which took place in Québec City (CAN) last week provided an excellent opportunity to promote the various FIS events that will take place in the province of Québec during the upcoming 2012/13 season.
The series of top competitions in the region will begin with the first FIS Cross-Country World Cup city sprint ever staged in eastern North America as Québec City hosts a sprint weekend on 8th-9th December 2012. FIS President Gian Franco Kasper unveiled the official course for the Sprint Québec 2012 together with Pierre Karl Péladeau, President and CEO of the main sponsor Quebecor.
The 800-meter track will be set just a snowball’s throw from the Québec Parliament with a spectacular backdrop of the historical building and views over the city.
President Kasper also looked ahead to the preparations for the FIS Snowboard World Championships 2013 in Stoneham scheduled for 18th-27th January 2013: “This will be two firsts for the province of Québec: the first senior FIS World Championships in any discipline and a first FIS Cross Country World Cup in the heart of any city in America.”
Stoneham has been a regular organizer of FIS Snowboard World Cup since 2003 whilst the tour frequented the province almost annually beginning in 1997.
In addition, the resort of Le Massif will host the FIS Junior World Ski Championships in Alpine Skiing which are planned for 18th-28th February 2013. Québec and Canada have previously hosted the Alpine Juniors in 2006 and 2000.
The week at SportAccord culminated in an entertaining FIS SportZone demo where Radio-Canada moderator Marc Durand together with Louis-Pierre Hélie, former-speed-racer-turned-ski-crosser, interviewed the local star and cross-country team sprint world champion Alex Harvey and the current downhill world champion Erik Guay, who lives just three hours away.
The athletes discussed the unique features of each discipline and the recent efforts in both Cross-Country and Alpine Skiing to bring the sport to the cities closer to the people whilst highlighting the great engagement of the region of Québec for winter sports. The session ended with the successful debut of Erik Guay on roller skis under the skillful tutelage of fellow champion Alex Harvey.
