FIS flag to fly on Mt Everest

18th April 2011 saw the handover of the FIS flag by the President of the Nepal Ski Association, Jeevan Ram Shrestha, to the Mount Everest Cleaning Expedition Team. During the 47th International Ski Congress in Antalya, Turkey, the Nepal Ski Association promised to carry the FIS flag onto the world's highest peak, Mount Everest, to celebrate the centenary of international skiing which took place in 2010. A ten-member team will head to Mount Everest on 19th April. They have targeted to climb to the peak of Mount Everest at 8848 meters above sea level between 5th and 25th May, 2011. Once successful, the flag will be returned to FIS President Gian Franco Kasper at the 2012 FIS Congress in Korea.

The expedition team members have a wealth of experience and are renowned mountaineers. One of the members, Pemba Dorje Sherpa is a Guinness World Record holder as the fastest climber and has climbed Everest ten times. There is one female on the team who has also summited Mt Everest once before. Another team member is a veteran, Chimmi Urken Gurung, who is the president of the Nepal Cycling Association and treasurer of the Nepal Olympic Committee. The objective of the team is to clean Everest from the top and deliver a message for a cleaner environment.
