FIS Speed Skiing Worlds set to kick off

FIS Speed Skiing Worlds set to kick off

From 19th to 26th January 2013, Vars (FRA) will play host to some accelerated race action as the FIS Speed Skiing World Championships will be taking place for the second time since 2009 at the resort in the southern French Alps.

This season highlight event for the best speed skiing athletes in the world will feature up to 20 nations and 100 thrill-seeking racers.

The competition will be held on the Chabrieres piste with an average gradient of 52.5 per cent. In the steepest parts at the top, the slope has an impressive 98 per cent level of steepness with its speed record currently being held at 243.9 kilometres per hour.

With Speed Skiing being the fasted non-mechanised sport in the world, there are to-date approximately 2'000 active speed skiers globally. The skiers wear aerodynamic helmets, a full body skin tight suit made of latex, specially shaped poles and wide skis of 2.30 to 2.50 meters length.

On a global scale, there are only a few speed skiing pistes of which Vars (FRA) counts amongst the best-known and fastest ones.
