Nakiska opens AUDI FIS Ski Cross World Cup 2012/13
7th and 8th December mark the birth of the Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup in Nakiska (CAN). As the first race on the season’s ski cross World Cup circuit, the event will set the stage for 190 of the world’s best skiers from 25 nations to compete at their best.
Alongside Blue Mountain, Ontario, Nakiska Ski Resort in Alberta is the second Canadian event on the FIS Ski Cross World Cup calendar and the first one staged in Western Canada since the 2010 Games in Vancouver.
The starting field will feature last year’s ski cross World Cup champions who are eager to attack the new season: On the men’s side, Slovenia’s Filip Flisar boasts the fastest growing fan club on the circuit due to his winning surge, outgoing personality and the famous moustache. Canada’s Marielle Thompson who powered through the season on the ladies side to win the crystal globe and helped Canada capture the Nation’s Cup one more time.
Earlier this week, members of the Canadian ski cross team unveiled a blue jean inspired descente race suit dedicated to the memory of their teammate Nik Zoricic, who tragically passed away following a crash at the season finals in Grindelwald (SUI) on 10th March 2012.
In its strong commitment to safety in the sport, FIS has established an expert Ski Cross Working Group that has implemented a variety of measures to work on preventing injuries occurring in the future and make the races as safe as possible. (Click here to view the full press release.)
“It is the continued goal of FIS to work to prevent injuries from occurring in the future, following the tragic accident that claimed the life of Canadian ski cross athlete Nik Zoricic. Besides considerable injury prevention efforts undertaken through FIS’s Injury Surveillance System, the Ski Cross Working Group will work with the FIS Freestyle Committee and its ski cross advisory group to design, refine, and implement various activities,” stated Michel Vion, FIS Council Member and chairman of the Ski Cross Working Group. After Nakiska, the tour will move on to Telluride (USA) for a combined FIS Freestyle Skiing and Snowboard World Cup where competitions in ski cross will be staged from 12th to 13th December.
