Chat with the FIS Race Directors – Lasse Ottesen

Chat with the FIS Race Directors – Lasse Ottesen

The first one to kick off the FIS Newsflash interview series “Chat with the FIS Race Directors” will be Lasse Ottesen. Succeeding Ulrich Wehling in September 2012, it will be his first season as FIS Nordic Combined Race Director since he joined the team in May 2011 as Nordic Combined Coordinator. A former ski jumper, Lasse competed at four World Championships and three Olympic Games, during which he won the Olympic silver medal on the normal hill in Lillehammer 1994.

FIS Newsflash: If you had to describe the new season in three words, what would they be and why?

Lasse Ottesen: “Exciting: It is always a thrill entering a new season.
Fun: Nordic Combined is on a positive track with great athletes, formats and Organising Committees for 26 events at 11 different venues in the coming season. That will be fun. :-)
Challenging: The new FIS staff and my personal role is different and more challenging than in the past season.”

FIS Newsflash: As you mentioned, you are new as Race Director - a challenge but also an opportunity. What can the Nordic Combined community expect in the next season and beyond?

Lasse Ottesen: “Within FIS, we are a team that will work with and for Nordic Combined. Our main goal is to stabilise the season calendar, continue to develop our Organising Committees, and put our stars into the spotlight. Our athletes are the ones who make Nordic Combined and will be the centre of attention.”

FIS Newsflash: You have recently participated in the final inspection for the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Val di Fiemme (ITA), a highlight on the 2012/13 season calendar. What can we look forward to?

Lasse Ottesen: “The FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Val di Fiemme will be great ones. One of the best Organising Committees will host their third Worlds since 1991. The venue has undergone large upgrades, and the responsible staff have so far done a great job, creating a special atmosphere outside the hill and tracks. We are really looking forward to this event.”

FIS Newsflash: As a former ski jumper, you have been an athlete yourself. If you could participate in any of the events as a Nordic Combined athlete on this season´s schedule, where would it be and why?

Lasse Ottesen: "I can’t single out an individual event, since they all have unique and special characterists. However this year
Seefeld (AUT) will celebrate its 10th anniversary as a Nordic Combined World Cup Organiser which is an important landmark, whilst Chaux Neuve (FRA) has established new initiatives to enhance the already great atmosphere featuring 10’000 – 15’000 spectators each day even further."

The 2012/13 FIS Nordic Combined team: Lasse Ottessen will be supported by Jan Rune Grave as Assistant Race Director and Guntram Kraus as Equipment Controller. New to the team will be Silke Tegethof as Media Coordinator. Toni Guggemoos will continue in his role as Continental Cup Coordinator whilst the administrative tasks are handled by Annemarie Friedrich and Judith Lessing.
