13 nations medal at Valmalenco 2011

13 nations medal at Valmalenco 2011

The FIS Junior World Snowboard Championships concluded last weekend in Valmalenco (ITA). Some 300 young riders competed for titles in a total of 10 events, five for each gender. 13 nations medaled at Valmalenco, with seven nations claiming gold.

The top of the medals table was split in three as Japan, Switzerland and Austria each collected four medals, all of them winning two gold medals, and one each of silver and bronze. Whilst the Japanese dominated the halfpipe, taking the ladies' and men's titles and another two medals, the central Europeans showed their strength in the parallel events.

Switzerland's Julie Zogg became the only double world champion at Valmalenco 2011, adding to her previous 2009 title and a total of three silver medals won in the last two years. Lukas Mathies of Austria (gold and silver) and Cheyenne Loch of Germany (silver and bronze) also collected two medals in the parallel events. Austrian Clemens Schattschneider won the men's title in slopestyle while Anna Gyarmati of Hungary secured the ladies' gold, a historical first medal for her country at the FIS or Junior World Championships. Schattschneider earlier in the season captured the first combined large World Cup crystal globe for big air and slopestyle.
