Schild and Kostelic reign in Flachau

Schild and Kostelic reign in Flachau

After the unfortunate cancellation of the races in Finnish Levi last month, Flachau (AUT) took over the organization of the two slaloms. For the third year in a row, Flachau was hence home to Audi FIS Ski World Cup night slaloms and this year the ladies race on Tuesday evening was followed by the men on Wednesday night.

Marlies Schild, who won the 2010 Flachau night slalom, returned as the absolute favorite after having claimed both ladies' slaloms disputed in Aspen and Courchevel in dominating style with more than one second margins. This year was no exception and Schild claimed her third victory in as many slalom races this season. Maria Höfl-Riesch finished second, 0.46 behind.

In the men's race, reigning overall World Cup title holder Ivica Kostelic took his second season win in slalom, and the 20th in his career. Kostelic won ahead of Sweden's Andre Myhrer and Italian Christian Deville who snapped his 2nd career podium.

Even though they had fairly short notice from their appointment to take over the races and only very recent snowfall, the Flachau Organizers did a great job in preparing the race hill for the two competitions. Estimated 19'500 spectators attended the event.

The Audi FIS Ski World Cup season will continue according to the schedule in Austrian Lienz with another pair of tech events for the ladies on 27th-28th December while the men will be racing downhill on the treacherous Stelvio in Bormio (ITA) on 29th December 2011.
