Study finds BMI rule helps manage jumper weight A recent study by the Institute for Sports, Business & Society (ISBS) at the EBS Universität für Wirtschaft und Recht has found out that the introduction of the BMI values in Ski Jumping has helped reduce the number of extremely thin competitors. The study was conducted in cooperation with the International Ski Federation (FIS) that introduced a rule linking the ski length of a ski jumper to his Body Mass Index (BMI) in 2004. According to the study, the first one to assess the influence of ski jumpers' BMI values on their competitive performance and the development of their BMI values, the BMI rule has led to a behavioural change: Based on data from World Cup competitions over the last ten years (2001-2011), jumpers with extremely low BMI values have disappeared from ski jumps in the world and no significant influence of ski jumpers' BMI values on the distance jumped can be determined under competitive conditions. In addition, the study looked at preferences of ski jumping fans. About 1,200 fans in 43 countries were asked whether the BMI rule has had an impact on their preferences for certain types of ski jumpers. It found that ski jumpers with higher BMI values are more popular among fans than jumpers with lower BMI values. For more details, click here. |
