Positive first tests for Sochi 2014

Positive first tests for Sochi 2014

The first FIS test events at the Sochi 2014 Alpine venue at Roza Khutor took place last week with the men's FIS European Cup races, followed by the ladies' competitions this week. Organized by the Russian Ski and Snowboard Federation, the schedule foresaw downhill and super-G competitions for both genders but due to heavy snowfall just before the men's events, the men's super-G race was cancelled whilst the downhill training and competition saw 60 racers compete. For the ladies, two downhill trainings and competitions have already been staged this week, with the final super-G scheduled for Friday 25th February.

"Due to the heavy snowfall of up to 2 meters of new snow, and the resulting avalanche danger, the men's downhill was carried out from the reserve start. We were positively surprised by the high level of sport-technical organization on the mountain and the organizers' ability to react and deal with the heavy snowfall," commented Markus Waldner, FIS European Cup Coordinator for the men. "These first test events were a great start on the way to the first World Cup races scheduled for next season, helping to pinpoint some critical points to address in the summer. These include the necessary precautions and actions to be undertaken with avalanche safety experts to protect the race courses in case of heavy snowfall."

The downhill start for the men at Roza Khutor is located at an altitude of 2,045 m above sea level and for ladies at 1,735m. The men's super-g start is at 1,592 m, and for ladies at 1,560m. For all courses there is a single finish area located at 960 m above sea level.

The first FIS men's test event also marked the first time in the history of Russian television broadcasting that Alpine Skiing was produced with domestic resources and televised by TV channels "Rossiya 2" (FSU "VPRK") and "NTV-Plus."
