London 2012 - Olympic flame lit at Olympia

The Olympic flame was lit this week for the London 2012 Olympic Summer Games. During a ceremony organized on 10th May 2012 by the Hellenic Olympic Committee, the lighting symbolically marked the beginning of the Torch Relay which will bring the flame to the Olympic Stadium in London on 27th July.

During its journey, the flame will visit more than 1,000 villages, towns and cities in the United Kingdom, as it is carried by 8,000 torchbearers.

"As the Olympic torch travels the width and breadth of the United Kingdom on its way to the Olympic Stadium in London, its powerful symbolism and the inspiring stories of many of the torchbearers will touch hearts and fire imaginations around the world," IOC President Jacques Rogge underlined in his speech.

In recognition of the Olympic values of friendship, excellence and respect, the United Nations has approved a resolution calling on nations to build a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal. Also the Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay will allow the world's population to be inspired by the message of peace and unity; 631 days currently remain until the next Olympic Winter Games in Sochi 2014.
