Exciting Snowboard finals in Arosa
The 2010/11 LG Snowboard FIS World Cup wrapped up with the four-day season's finals in Arosa (SUI) last weekend. Two snowboard cross competitions per gender, which saw six racers in each heat, for the first time, were followed by the season's last half-pipe and parallel giant slalom events.
The decision for the season titles in SBX had been left to the finals. Although Bulgarian Alexandra Jekova celebrated double victory in Arosa, the first ones ever for her home country, the small crystal globe went to Dominique Maltais. The Canadian, who clinched her career's second SBX World Cup globe in the first of the two events in Arosa, secured the title ahead of Jekova and Lindsey Jacobellis (USA).
It was a tight decision for the men's SBX World Cup title but Alex Pullin (AUS), who won the season's last race, also claimed the first globe for a male boarder from down under with a marginal lead of only 60 points. Leading before the final event, Pierre Vaultier (FRA) only needed to make the final heat in the last race, so a globe for Pullin was a possibility no one had really thought likely even if theoretically possible. With Vaultier missing out and Pulling winning, the Frenchman ended up second in the season rankings with Jonathan Cheever (USA) taking third.
In the final half-pipe, Queralt Castellet (SPA) triumphed in the ladies' event thus delivering the first World Cup win for Spain. The Swiss men's team swept the podium with the trio of Iouri Podladtchikov, Jan Scherrer and Patrick Burgener. The halfpipe as well as freestyle snowboard overall World Cup titles (BA, SBS, HP) went to Xuetong Cai (CHN) on the ladies' and Nathan Johnstone (AUS) on the men's side. It was the second small crystal globe for Australia within 48 hours and the first large crystal globe in its' history.
In the last parallel giant slalom held on the Carmenna slope, Fraenzi Maegert-Kohli (SUI) and Andreas Prommegger (AUT) successfully competed against the international field. Russian Ekaterina Tudegesheva however emerged as the parallel and speed overall World Cup champion after winning six races during the 2010/2011 winter. Prommegger, racing with some serious injuries, witnessed his teammate Benjamin Karl win the men's small and large crystal globes in parallel, titles Karl already previously secured in the 2008 and 2010 seasons.
