Cross-Country: Who will take the crystal globe – Bjoergen or Kowalczyk?
For the fourth time in a row, the Cross-Country World Cup Final will be held as a four-stage competition series in Sweden. The kick-off for the final battle to win the overall globe will be launched on Wednesday with a classical sprint around the castle in Stockholm followed by a short interval race to search for the king and queen of the Mörderbakken on Friday, a mass start competition on Saturday and a pursuit race on Sunday – all in Falun, the host of the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2015.
Marit Bjoergen has the best cards at the moment to win the ladies overall globe for the third time. The Norwegian Olympic Champion is 138 points ahead of title defender Justyna Kowalczyk from Poland after a successful week in Norway. In the World Cup final 350 points will be still awarded – 50 points per stage win (except the last day) and 200 points for the overall victory of the World Cup Final.
The men’s World Cup winner is already decided. Dario Cologna will be able to take the crystal globe home to Switzerland on Sunday for the third time after 2009 and 2011. After the announcement of Petter Northug that he will not be taking part in the World Cup Final, the runner up position in the overall ranking will most likely go to Canadian Devon Kershaw. With a great performance also Alexander Legkov and Marcus Hellner still have a chance to overtake Northug for third spot as they are currently respectively 245 and 264 points behind the Norwegian top athlete.
The ladies sprint World Cup trophy will go for the first time in the history to a US skier. Alaska’s Kikkan Randall, who won two World Cup sprints this season, secured the small globe already in Drammen last week. On the men’s side the overall sprint victory was won by Sweden’s newcomer Teodor Peterson.
Marit Bjoergen secured the distance World Cup win on the ladies side with her victory in the 30 km in Oslo last weekend,whilst the men’s distance globe will go to Dario Cologna.
Despite all discipline rankings having found their winner already, the battle for the other podium spots is still on. We can therefore expect an exciting World Cup Final where all the top 50 qualified athletes as well as the Continental cup leaders/winners and U23 World Champions will take their final power together and fight for the World Cup points.
