Three races remain in FIS Marathon Cup Three races remain on the schedule for this season's FIS Marathon Cup with the traditional 90km Vasaloppet in classical technique next this coming Sunday in Swedish Mora. After the Finlandia in Lahti (FIN) last weekend, the rankings on the men's side are led by Fabio Santus of Italy with 413 points. Two Swedes Jerry Ahrlin (381 points) and Oskar Svaerd (350 points) remain in striking distance. After Vasaloppet, there are still the 42km free technique Engadin Ski Marathon (SUI) and the 54km classical technique Birkebeinerrennet (NOR) to contest. On the ladies side, Sandra Hansson of Sweden has a commanding lead in the rankings with 557 points thanks to four individual race victories. Sabina Valbusa (ITA) trails by 142 points, whilst Susanne Nystrom (SWE) is third with 341 points. The current popular marathon season is breaking participant records left and right and the Vasaloppet Winter Week 2011 is no exception. So far 58'821 skiers have registered for the nine races staged during the week. Both Sunday's Vasaloppet with 15'800 entries and the relay race StafettVasan with 6'000 skiers in 1'200 teams are sold out. Tuesday saw the HalvVasan, the 45 km halfway distance, on the program. At nine in the morning when the sun rose over the trees at Oxberg the so-called running start began. The sun shone for the most part of the day and 'the course was like a railway track.' At the start the temperature was -14°C but it became warmer the longer the day went on. The forecast for the rest of the week, too, bodes well for a great Cross-Country festival in Central Sweden.
