Venue work top focus for Vail/Beaver Creek 2015
Plans for the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2015 are well underway. Officials from FIS, the Vail Valley Foundation, Tridem Sports, Vail Resorts and the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association wrapped up two days of Coordination Group Meetings Wednesday in Vail. They visited both competition venues, including the Birds of Prey and Golden Peak finish areas, as well as operational and ceremony sites.
"It is terrific to work directly with Organizers and to have everyone around the table providing value," said FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis. "The ability to have all parties working together allows us all to uphold the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships as the premier winter sports event outside the Olympic Winter Games. The fact that Vail Resorts and USSA leadership is participating actively with the Organizing Committee is a big help in the preparations."
The Coordination Group meetings are held with World Championship Organizers two times a year. The group last met during the December Birds of Prey World Cup in Beaver Creek.
Organizers gave a detailed tour of the Birds of Prey finish area, outlining plans for upgrades to the existing finish stadium and creation of a new ladies' downhill course. Pending final approvals, work on those projects is anticipated to begin soon. FIS officials were especially excited about the opportunities presented by the Vail Golden Peak venue that will play host to the opening ceremony, qualifying events and the Nation's Team Event. The group also visited the proposed medals venue at the Solaris plaza in Vail Village. While most of the competition events will be held at Beaver Creek, it is anticipated the Vail will become the epicenter for fans with key events at Golden Peak and daily medal ceremonies located right in the village.
"We've been successful with major events in our country because we work together," said USSA President and CEO Bill Marolt. "Each party here plays a role in the success of the World Championships."
"We have a terrific team in place," offered Ceil Folz, president of the Vail Valley Foundation, "both in terms of our internal 2015 Organizing Committee and our partners from the FIS, EBU, Tridem and USSA. We are pleased to say that everything is on track as we near 1,000 days to go until the Championships."
The World Championships are set for 3rd-15th February 2015.
