Almost 7’000 hours of skiing on TV in 2011/12
The 2012 International Ski Congress in Kangwonland also provides an opportunity to look back at the past 2011/12 season from the perspective of the overall TV facts and figures.
A season 2011/12 final report by IFM Sports summarizing the TV coverage of the Audi FIS Ski World Cup, FIS Cross-Country World Cup presented by Viessmann, Bauhaus FIS Ski Jumping World Cup and DKB FIS Nordic Combined World Cup showed that the overall total broadcasting time amounted to 6'267 hours. The total cumulated TV audience for these four race series is estimated at 7´393 million.
In terms of both broadcasting time and audience, Alpine Skiing accounted for 60.4% of the total broadcasting time (3783 hours) and for 39.9% of the total audience (2949 million). The respective figures for Ski Jumping are 16.3% of broadcasting time and 26.5% of audience and for Cross-Country Skiing, 19.3 % of broadcasting time and 27.6% of the audience.
In Cross-Country, broadcasting time has significantly increased by more than 30%, particularly influenced by Poland where ladies’ races were broadcast for more than 100 hours.
In addition, seasonal highlights like the Tour de Ski in Cross-Country and the Four-Hills Tournament in Ski Jumping each generate 29% of the total media impact.
The territories showing the most coverage in Alpine Skiing, are Switzerland (586 hours) followed by the United States (444 hours) and Austria (423 hours). In this discipline, five countries (AUT, GER, ITA, SWE, SUI) and Pan-European coverage generate more than 80% of media impact.
Overall, Ski Jumping still remains the discipline with the highest media impact of all FIS disciplines.
