Bring Children to the Snow at IOC's Sport for All

Bring Children to the Snow at IOC's Sport for All

The FIS Campaign Bring Children to the Snow and the inaugural FIS World Snow Day, set to be launched in just 122 days on 22nd January 2012, were featured at the IOC's 14th World Conference on Sport for All in Beijing (CHN). FIS Secretary General Sarah Lewis presented the concept of the FIS campaign launched in late 2007 at the opening plenary session on Wednesday 22nd September.

Getting children active - and keeping them so throughout life - is a common theme running throughout the Conference that sees participation by international federations, National Olympic Committees, UN agencies, NGOs, academics and sports ministries the world over to present research, policies and programs centered around "Sport for All".

Some 700 participants are joining the event from 20th-23rd October 2011 carried out at the China National Convention Center, former Main Press Center and International Broadcasting Center during the 2008 Summer Games. The 2010 edition of Sport for All was held in Jyväskylä, Finland and as the conference closes Friday, Beijing will be passing the torch to the 2013 host city Lima.

The IOC has recently been focused on the topic of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which include heart diseases, diabetes and osteoporosis. The two main risk factors for NCDs are obesity and physical inactivity. At least 2.6 million people each year die as a result of being overweight or obese, and children are also affected. It is estimated that, in 2005, at least 20 million children under the age of five were overweight. Childhood obesity is associated with a higher chance of premature death and disability in adulthood, and physical activity and sport have an important role to play in stopping this dangerous trend. Snow activities are a great way to remain active during the winter months which is one of the premises of the FIS Campaign Bring Children to the Snow and the launch of the FIS World Snow Day.
