Ski Jumping: Germany wins team and individual competition in Kuusamo

Kuusamo (FIN) welcomed the ski jumpers to their second competition weekend of the season from 30th November to 1st December and the combined Nordic Opening with all three disciplines together. Covered with snow and frosty as always, the hill of Ruka was perfectly prepared and offered the opportunity for fair and exciting competition days for athletes and spectators alike.

After 1027 days, the German team returned to the top of the podium with a well-deserved victory in the first men’s team competition of the new season. With an impressive performance Severin Freund, Andreas Wellinger, Michael Neumayer and Richard Freitag presented themselves in great shape at this early stage of the season. Ranking second behind Slovenia after the first round, Germany was able to claim the lead in the final round and to defend its position against the teams from Austria and Slovenia.

On 1st December, Severin Freund followed up Germany's win with another victory in the individual competition which turned out to be a very exciting. In the first round, Slovenia's Jaka Hvala showed the longest jump and was in the lead, but could not keep up with the other athletes in the final round. Dimitri Vassiliev, who was last on the podium in Planica (SLO) in 2009, showed a great performance and ranked second at the end. Also Simon Ammann from Switzerland seems to be on his way back to his previous level as the 31-year-old edged out Gregor Schlierenzauer (AUT) and Andreas Wellinger (GER) for third and was absolutely satisfied: "I gained a lot of self-confidence here in Kuusamo and I was able to show a good performance even in difficult conditions."

The World Cup tour is now moving on to Sochi (RUS) where the ladies will be joining the men again. From 7th to 9th December four individual competitions will take place at the venue of the Olympic Winter Games 2014 for the first Ski Jumping events there on snow.
