Great action at the Audi FIS Ski World Cup opening

Great action at the Audi FIS Ski World Cup opening

Tina Maze demonstrated her best form in the season opening Audi FIS Ski World Cup giant slalom on 27th October in Soelden (AUT) by landing on top of the podium ahead of the Austrians Kathrin Zettel and Stefanie Koehle. Just like last year, Ted Ligety was the hero of the men’s giant slalom the day after. With an unbeatable lead of 2.75 seconds, he dominated in tough weather conditions with historical time margins of 2.75 and 3.12 seconds ahead of Italy’s Manfred Moelgg and local hero Marcel Hirscher.

Whilst Tina Maze kept her cool throughout two postponements during the second run due to difficult weather conditions, Ted Ligety proved once again to be the king of giant slalom. “That's probably a once in a career achievement, it’s pretty phenomenal!” he stated after the race.

In front of an estimated 21’000 cheering fans, the competitions on the Rettenbach glacier once again proved to showcase top level skiing, whetting the appetite for the rest of the season. It was also the debut for the skis compliant with the new FIS specifications, introduced to reduce the risk of injury and improve safety.

Traditionally, the Audi FIS Ski World Cup opening in Soelden is more than just a ski race. Already on Wednesday night, the small town in the heart of the Tyrol region began its season celebrations. Numerous press conferences by the ski industry and top athletes were followed by the traditional FIS Forum Alpinum and several other events, such as the popular street parade of fan clubs.

The next Audi FIS Ski World Cup races - the first slaloms of the season are set to take place in Levi, Finland on 10th-11th November 2012. The positive snow control was conducted by Hans Pieren, FIS Race Director for the men’s tech events, already on Tuesday, two days ahead of the scheduled time, thanks to the excellent snow conditions at Levi this year.
