Vail-Beaver Creek 2015 2nd Coordination Group The 2nd meeting of the Coordination Group for the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2015 in Vail - Beaver Creek was held on 10th and 11th May. The resorts have enjoyed a fantastic season recording increased numbers on the slopes and the snow hasn't stopped with more nearly 2 meters falling on the mountains since the resorts closed after Easter. It even snowed heavily on 11th May, closing the road and delaying planes at Denver airport for periods of the day! Vail Valley Foundation's President, Ceil Folz led the Organizing Committee's reports on the various activities since the previous meeting in September 2010, as well as the key action areas identified for the next six months. The ten ladies and men's individual competitions will all take place at Beaver Creek with a new course for being built for the ladies events, whilst the qualification races and the Opening Ceremony will be staged on Golden Peak in Vail. An analysis is presently underway to include the Nations Team Event there too. Both resorts were represented at the meetings, by Doug Lovell, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer for Beaver Creek and by Chris Jarnot, Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Vail Mountain along with the mayor of Vail, Dick Cleveland. Members of the Town Council and Organizing Committee joined the group in the evening and communicated their commitment to creating a great ski festival in 2015. Site inspections of the area for the television compound and the Beaver Creek access routes took place, as well as a visit to the medals plaza and Golden Peak in Vail. President of the United States Ski and Snowboard Association, Bill Marolt reported on the strategy of the US ski team to focus on having successful teams at the Championships and building momentum and interest all over the country beforehand. A special highlight during the Coordination Group's visit was the announcement of the induction of John Garnsey into the Colorado Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame. A former FIS TD, he has been a key figure during the three FIS Alpine World Championships in Vail - Beaver Creek and since 2008 is the Co-president of Vail Resorts. |
