Major World Cup weekend on two continents

It was another major winter sport weekend last weekend. The FIS Cross-Country World Cup presented by Viessmann returned to Otepää (EST) for a pair of classical technique races. More than 10'000 people came to see the Tour de Ski winners Justyna Kowalczyk (POL) and Dario Cologna (SUI) continue to showcase their excellent form and win both Saturday's sprint and Sunday's individual start competitions. In Petter Northug's absence, Cologna grew his points lead to 294 in the overall rankings whilst Kowalczyk still trails Marit Bjoergen in the ladies' standings.

In Zakopane (POL), local hero Kamil Stoch claimed his second career victory in front of the home audience on Friday. In Saturday's second Bauhaus FIS Ski Jumping World Cup presented by Viessmann, 22-year-old Austrian Gregor Schlierenzauer claimed the 39th World Cup victory of his career, matching Polish legend Adam Malysz. The lead for the most career wins is held by Matti Nykänen (FIN) with 46. In the World Cup overall standings, Schlierenzauer sits in 2nd, 39 points behind teammate Andreas Kofler.

The FIS Ski Jumping World Cup ladies presented by Viessmann and the DKB FIS Nordic Combined World Cup presented by Rauch both had a weekend off.

The men's tour in the Audi FIS Ski World Cup continued with the 72nd Hahnenkamm Races in Kitzbühel (AUT) in difficult weather conditions. Both Thursday's third DH training and Friday's super-G had to be cancelled due to warm weather and heavy precipitation. On Saturday, despite major overnight snow and continuing snowfall during the race, the downhill was carried out from a lower start position. The unquestionable star of the race was Switzerland's Didier Cuche who, just two days after announcing his retirement at the end of the season, claimed a historical 5th downhill victory in Kitzbühel, becoming the sole record holder eclipsing the legendary Franz Klammer. In Sunday's slalom, the victory went to Christian Deville of Italy who scored his first career win while Ivica Kostelic (CRO) won the special Kitzbühel combined as he did in 2011. In the traditional Night Race in Schladming on Tuesday night, Austrian Marcel Hirscher took his sixth season victory in front of more than 45'000 fans.

Kranjska Gora jumped in for fellow Slovenian site of Maribor to host the ladies and offered a beautiful winter setting for the weekend's racing. Saturday's giant slalom podium had an average age of 22, led by France's Tessa Worley along with Federica Brignone (ITA) and Viktoria Rebensburg (GER) whilst the slalom win was clinched by Michaela Kirchgasser for whom it was a career first in slalom coming six years after her first victory, in giant slalom. The slalom queen of the season Marlies Schield failed to finish and hence broke her record series.

The FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup continued in Lake Placid (USA) with moguls and aerials. Hannah Kearney (USA) and Mikael Kingsbury (CAN) went four of four this season in moguls, further growing their overall leads. The Chinese aerials team dominated the aerials competitions taking 8 of the 12 podium places although the Swiss men took a historical double victory in Saturday's competition.

At the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup in Veysonnaz (SUI), Lindsey Jacobellis (USA) and Andrey Boldykov (RUS) won the first of the two snowboard cross competitions. On Sunday, Lindsey Jacobellis (USA) doubled up and Nate Holland ensured a complete American day. The two also lead the SBX World Cup season rankings.
