Canadian dominance in Deer Valley 2011
The FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships 2011 in Deer Valley (USA) wrapped up on Saturday with dual moguls as the last event following 12 events hosted over four days at two different venues. The debut of slopestyle for ladies and men was warmly welcome both by fans and athletes.
The two resorts that were both competition venues during the 2002 Games and are regular hosts of top level competitions since the Games, teamed up to throw a true celebration for sizable crowds. The spectator numbers were large, with approximately 8000 people attending Friday and Saturday nights. Off-the-slopes destinations like Main Street were buzzing even in the days after the close of the Championships.
At Deer Valley, the world's best aerialists, mogul skiers and ski cross athletes performed their events whilst Park City was the venue for the best slopestyle and halfpipe skiers. These high-energy events were captivating and introduced the spectators to next-generation disciplines with many youngsters coming to watch the stars.
With a total of 17 medals, Canadians clearly showed they are world champions and their versatility in winning medals in 10 out of 12 events. Jennifer Heil, who earlier this month announced her retirement at end of season, added another two gold medals to her fantastic resume. Winning the moguls on the first competition day, and closing by winning the dual moguls, she became the only double champion at Deer Valley 2011. On the men's side, two experienced skiers Alexandre Bilodeau (CAN) and Guilbaut Colas (FRA) took the top spots ahead of 18-year-old challenger Mikael Kingsbury (CAN). In dual moguls, the same two Canadians celebrated gold and silver ahead of Nobuyuki Nishi who took the only medal for Japan.
Australian Anna Segal made history as the first female gold medalist in slopestyle whilst Canadian Kaya Turski, slopestyle X Games gold medalist kept her medal streak alive with the silver medal, with American Keri Herman taking bronze. In the debut of the mens' slopestyle event, local teen Alex Schlopy from Park City won the gold medal, followed by Sammy Carlson (USA) and Russel Henshaw (AUS).
Altogether 36 nations participated and saw Canada dominating the medals table (17), followed by USA (6) and China (3). The next FIS Freestyle World Championships will take place in Voss, Norway in 2013.
