Worldwide FIS World Cup action
Whilst the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2011 in Oslo are in full swing, the FIS World Cups in the other disciplines have been in action the world over, from Bulgaria to Canada, Sweden and the Czech Republic.
After a break of three weeks, the men's Audi FIS Ski World Cup tour resumed in Bansko, Bulgaria, some two-hour-drive south of Sofia. After successfully organizing a series of FIS and European Cup races, three ladies' World Cup speed races were held in Bansko in February 2009. Meanwhile, for the men's tour, last weekend's events were the first World Cups since 1981 and 1984 when Borovetz staged the previous competitions in Bulgaria. Due to unpredictable weather currents, the men's super combined saw a historical World Cup first with the slalom run being staged before the super-G, won by the triple medalist and star of GAP2011, Italy's Christof Innerhofer. In the slalom, Mario Matt returned to the top of the podium for the first time in almost two years. A technical weekend in Kranjska Gora (SLO) awaits the men next.
In Are (SWE) the 2007 FIS Alpine World Ski Championship venue welcomed the ladies' tour back for a three-event weekend. The duel for the ladies' overall World Cup victory saw another exciting chapter as Maria Riesch collected 260 points (two victories, one 3rd place) against Lindsey Vonn's 220 (1st, 2nd and 6th) in the three competitions, thereby growing her lead in the rankings to 196 points before the final three weeks of racing. The ladies have another three-race weekend in Tarvisio this week, starting with a make-up super combined on Friday.
The FIS Freestyle World Cup continued in Marianske Lazne (CZE) with a dual moguls event where ladies moguls World Cup leader Hannah Kearney (USA) celebrated her birthday Saturday winning her sixth World Cup of the season. On the men’s side, in what is becoming the battle of the titans, Canadians Alex Bilodeau and Mikael Kingsbury went head-to-head in the finals of the dual mogul event with Bilodeau besting Kingsbury. Moguls World Cup leader Guilbaut Colas of France took 5th and retained his lead in the rankings. This week, it is time for the 4th edition of the Swiss Ski Cross Week with back-to-back events in Grindelwald and Meiringen-Hasliberg in the Bernese Oberland. The moguls World Cup will be back in action 11-12th March in Are, Sweden with a moguls and dual moguls event.
The LG Snowboard FIS World Cup concluded its Canadian tour in Calgary with the season's first slopestyle event along with a halfpipe carried out in the Calgary Olympic Park. Allyson Carroll (USA) and Clemens Schattschneider (AUT) won season’s first SBS whilst halfpipe World Cup leaders Xuetong Cai (CHN) and Ryo Aono (JPN) took their own in the former Olympic venue. The world's best riders will next be competing this weekend in Moscow (RUS) where a parallel slalom with finals under floodlight will be held.
