GAP 2011 passes keys of success to Schladming

GAP 2011 passes keys of success to Schladming

Earlier this week, the top management team of GAP 2011 led by Co-Managing Directors Peter Fischer and Walter Vogel, together with Sports Director Heinz Mohr and Race Office Manager, Gabi Maurer travelled to Schladming (AUT) to share their lessons learned with the Organizers of the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2013 in great detail. The intense exchange revealed key factors to the success in Garmisch-Partenkirchen including an experienced sports organization, a number of important test events, detailed financial management and reporting, a continuous involvement of the local community and focus on public transportation to solve access challenges.

In the end, impressive 46% of the visitors came with public transport thanks to combining free public transportation in the event tickets which was possible through an important investment by the Organizing Committee with significant support from the German Bundesbahn as well as various local and regional transport authorities. 11'000 free tickets to the opening ceremony were distributed in the community around Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The sports organization especially benefited from a series of test events that were progressively more demanding, concluding with the 2010 FIS Alpine Ski World Cup Finals as the final and most important test.

On Tuesday, the organizing committee of Schladming 2013 led by the Austrian Ski Association President Peter Schröcksnadel and Secretary General Klaus Leistner with the experienced local Organizers in Schladming welcomed the representatives of FIS, EBU, host broadcaster ORF and EBU's marketing partner Tridem for the 4th Coordination Group meeting. Following the unveiling of the event's motto - "Skifest mit Herz" or "Ski Festival with Heart" - the Schladming 2013 team revealed its goal to deliver an event with "Tradition, Innovation and Emotion."

Meanwhile truly impressive progress since the last Coordination Group has been achieved by the lift company, Planai Bahnen, which are investing a total of 70 million Euros in the form of adaptations to the courses and the construction of the new stadium around Planet Planai. Massive construction is currently underway to build the new subterranean services and hospitality facilities planned to be tested already for the Night Race 2012, as well as during the main test event, the Audi FIS Ski World Cup Finals 2012 in March 2012. The construction of the new Schladming Conference Center is also on plan, and scheduled to be put into operation from 1st November 2011 in order to serve as the media center starting with the Night Race 2012.
