LG Snowboard FIS World Cup concludes
The 2012 LG Snowboard FIS World Cup season wrapped up at the Finals in Valmalenco (ITA) with two snowboard cross events and a parallel giant slalom. The Italian venue has become well known in recent years as a top level Organizer of early spring FIS World Cup events, including the Snowboard and Freestyle Ski competitions at the Grand Finals in 2008.
In snowboard cross, Dominique Maltais (CAN) and Pierre Vaultier (FRA) were the top favorites for the titles. Going into the final two events, Maltais had a lead of more than 500 points over teammate Maelle Ricker, the reigning Olympic champion, whilst on the men's side, the French World Cup leader and two-time title holder had a comfortable lead of about 1,500 points.
Thanks to her two fourth place finishes, Maltais secured her career third World Cup title beating Ricker by 250 points, who won the first event but only scored 5th in the final one. On the men's side, Vaultier went out in the semis of the first competition due to an injury (suspicion of ankle fracture) but still managed to clinch his third World Cup title with 3,852 points.
In the Parallel World Cup, two duels were in focus. On the ladies' side, Amelie Kober (GER) was the only race boarder with theoretical chances to challenge World Cup leader Patrizia Kummer (SUI) for the globe. The ladies' decision came to an early end after Kummer secured a spot in the finals and finished second which pre-empted Kober's chances.
On the men's side, Andreas Prommegger (AUT) had the best hand and a lead of 620 points over his only challenger, Roland Fischnaller (ITA). In the men's final, Fischnaller made it a close call after he celebrated his season's fifth win as Prommegger finished sixth. With that, Prommegger secured his first World Cup title by a narrow margin of only 20 points from runner-up Fischnaller.Decisions for the overall LG Snowboard FIS World Cup events had already fallen two weeks earlier during the competitions in Stoneham (CAN).
