Alpine NorAm titles to Julia Ford and Erik Read
The NorAm Cup 2011/12 in Alpine Skiing finished with a men's slalom in Mont Sainte Anne, Quebec, on 24th March. Due to inclement weather, the Finals week saw the cancellation of all speed and giant slalom races, with only the final slaloms being contested on Friday and Saturday.
Canada's Erik Read took his first NorAm Cup overall title, just ten points ahead of American downhill and super-G title winner Ryan Cochran-Siegle who landed second. Canadian Trevor Philp finished 3rd. Read claimed the men's super combined title for the season as well.
On the ladies' side, American Julia Ford claimed her first overall NorAm Cup title after finishing second in the NorAm overall standings in each of the previous three years. Teammate Abby Ghent grabbed second place, forty one points behind Ford. Fellow American Megan McJames took third in the overall standings while also claiming the NorAm Cup giant slalom title. Ford also won the downhill rankings while the super-G title went to Russian Maria Bedareva, as her teammate Elena Prosteva took the honors in super combined.
The ladies' NorAm Cup tour concluded Friday with a slalom race in challenging snow conditions. World Cup regulars took the top two spots as Marie-Michele Gagnon won and Erin Mielzynski took second. The NorAm slalom title for went to Canadian Elli Terwiel who also skis for the University of Vermont.
In the final NorAm Cup race of the year, Canadian Michael Janyk took the slalom win ahead of Colby Granstrom of the U.S. Despite making the decision to head home to prepare for U.S. Nationals at Winter Park next week, American Will Brandenburg clinched the men's NorAm Cup slalom title with a thirty-point advantage. The giant slalom title went to US racer Robby Kelley.
