Snowboard World Cup big air-slopestyle decision
The focus of the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup tour this week is on Bardonecchia and freestyle snowboarding. The fifth and the penultimate halfpipe competition will see its qualifiers on 10th March and finals 11th March whilst the season's second slopestyle World Cup competition will be held on Sunday 13th March. The slopes in Melezet, the 2006 Olympic venue for the snowboard competitions, will crown this winter's first overall World Cup title winner as the large crystal globe for the winner of the first big air-slopestyle World Cup will be decided.
Clemens Schattschneider (AUT) has the best chance of bringing home the coveted crystal globe after the 19-year-old claimed his maiden World Cup win in Calgary, Canada. His main challenger in Bardonecchia will be fellow countryman Stefan Falkeis who currently trails him by some 600 points.
In the race for the ladies' halfpipe World Cup title, Chinese Xuetong Cai has a comfortable lead ahead of Holly Crawford (AUS), who however has a good chance of making up ground especially if the reigning world champion clinches a World Cup win. Crawford's countryman Nathan Johnstone is battling with Ryo Aono in a duel for the men's title. At the moment, the Japanese has 2,800 points but since as the two-time World Cup title winner (2007, 2009) won't compete in Bardonecchia, the 2011 world champion from Australia could take over the lead in the race for the globe by winning or placing second on Friday. The season finals for halfpipe will be staged on 26th March in Arosa (SUI).
