Rjukan to host Telemark Worlds 2011

Rjukan to host Telemark Worlds 2011

The overall Telemark World Cup trophies were distributed at Hafjell (NOR) last weekend to Swiss Amélié Reymond, who successfully defended her 2010 title, and Frenchman Philipp Lau, with Reymond again also collecting all three event season titles. In the men's events, Bastien Dayer (SUI) won the classic rankings, whilst Philip Lau secured the sprint and Sven Lau (FRA) the giant slalom season trophy.

The Telemark season will now conclude with a true season highlight at the FIS Telemark World Championships in Rjukan (NOR) where the classic and giant slalom events will be carried out on Wednesday and Thursday this week and the final sprint event on Saturday. Two years ago in Kreischberg-Murau (AUT), Reymond won the ladies' GS gold and Sigrid Rykhus won the sprint and classic events. Eirik Rykhus will defend the men's GS title from 2009, while Mattias Wagenius (SWE) is the reigning classic title holder and Boerge Soevik (NOR) won the sprint gold in 2009.

Some 5'000 spectators are expected during the week to visit the various competitions and side events. "A championship like this is a very special occasion for us. We want to make it memorable for the athletes, officials, guests, sponsors, spectators and organizers alike," said Chairman of the Organizing Committee Kjell-Gunnar Dahle. Rjukan will also feature a test competition in the new Telemark event known as Telemark parallel.

The Norwegian royal family will also be present in Rjukan. Crown Prince Haakon will be in the royal stand during the Telemark classic event on Thursday 17th March. Moreover, the championships will be broadcast on Eurosport and on NRK.no.
