FIS World Cup season continues
With a weekend off in the FIS Cross-Country World Cup presented by Viessmann for national championships as well as a break in the DKB FIS Nordic Combined World Cup, the spotlight of the Nordic events fell on the annual Japanese tour to Sapporo in the Bauhaus FIS Ski Jumping World Cup presented by Viessmann last weekend. In both of the two competitions, the home crowd could rejoice with one of their own as Daiki Ito claimed his first two career victories. Kamil Stoch of Poland also collected two podium places, finishing third and second respectively. Austrian Andreas Kofler continues to lead the overall standings after finishing third on Sunday.
The Audi FIS Ski World Cup featured two speed weekends, with the ladies in St Moritz (SUI) and the men in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (GER). Beautiful winter weather accompanied the ladies' long weekend in the Engadine with the season's first super combined events. On Friday and Saturday, the overall leader Lindsey Vonn (USA) snatched World Cup victories 48 and 49 in a dominant fashion. In the final race of the weekend on Sunday, the reigning World Cup title holder Maria Höfl-Riesch (GER) beat Vonn by 0.03 seconds to grab her first season victory and the first one since her wedding last spring. Niki Hosp (AUT) also made a return to the podium in both of the super combined events, for the first time in 14 months and after her latest comeback from injury, while Liechtenstein's young Tina Weirather reconfirmed her early season podium place finishing 3rd in the downhill.
Difficult weather conditions continue to plague the men's tour as after a challenging speed weekend in Kitzbühel, another front with precipitation and fog fell on Garmisch-Partenkirchen last weekend. While the men's downhill was staged in a shortened length from the super-G start there was no change to the winner: Didier Cuche (USA) took his second downhill win in a row and now is aiming for his fifth downhill crystal globe in his last season of racing. The super-G set for Sunday had to be cancelled due to persisting fog which has since been rescheduled in Kvitfjell (NOR) in early March - provided no downhill is cancelled in the meantime - while the super-G cancelled in Kitzbühel (AUT) will be staged in Crans-Montana (SUI) on 24th February 2012.
The Freestyle Ski World Cup continued in the Olympic Park in Calgary (CAN) with a pair of moguls and aerials events. In the season's fifth mogul events, there was however no change on top: Hannah Kearney (USA) and Mikael Kingsbury (CAN) took their fifth season victories and lead the rankings with a full house each. For Kearney it was the 12th back-to-back World Cup victory. In the aerials events, Canada's Olivier Rochon took his career-first victory and also grabbed the leader's yellow jersey while China's Mengtao Xu leads the ladies rankings with three victories in a row. This week will see a full program of Freestyle Ski action with the Audi FIS Ski Cross World Cup continuing in Blue Mountain (CAN), whilst aerial and mogul stars will be back at the 2011 Worlds venue of Deer Valley for the annual World Cup.
Meanwhile the LG Snowboard FIS World Cup continued in Sudelfeld/ Bayrischzell (GER) with the season's third parallel giant slalom events. Amelie Kober (GER) beat Marion Kreiner (AUT) in the ladies' final to repeat the win from 2010 on her home slope just minutes away from her home town and the first World Cup win since her return to racing after a maternity break. In the men's competition, the Austrians swept the podium led by Siegfried Grabner along with Lukas Mathies who took 2nd while Andreas Prommegger finished 3rd. The LG Snowboard FIS World Cup will continue in Canada with a SBX at Blue Mountain on 7th - 8th February.
