Developing Skiing in Togo
The 48th International Ski Congress in Kangwonland (KOR) affiliated Eritrea, Haiti, British Virgin Islands, Palestine and Togo as associate members of the International Ski Federation. The total number of members in the International Ski Federation now amounts to 117 .
FIS Newsflash will be presenting an insight into the activities of these new and other members of the global ski family on a bi-weekly basis during the summer, beginning with Togo in this week’s edition.
Situated in the Western part of the continent, Togo is one of the smallest countries in Africa with approximately six million inhabitants. As in most parts of Africa, winter sports in Togo are relatively unknown mostly due to geographical and climatic conditions.
Among the few African athletes who have participated in international winter sports events, was the Ghanaian Kwame Nkrumh-Acheampong, better known as the “Snow Leopard” of the Vancouver Olympics in 2010, who ranked 47th in the slalom.
In October 2011, a Team Togo has been formed under the umbrella of the Togo Ski Federation, which aims at making winter sports, especially ski cross, popular among the people of Togo and Africa. The idea and objective of the Team Togo is to build a Freestyle ski cross team to participate in the 2013 FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships in Voss (NOR) and the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi (RUS). For this purpose, it plans to organize training camps under the leadership of former German athletes.
Eve-Roger Evenamede, President of the Togo Ski Federation told the FIS Newsflash: “Ski cross is a sport with entertainment value, which has not been exercised by any African starter at international competitions. With our project we would like to offer a new experience to the population of Togo, which will make them proud and joyful. We would especially like to convince youngsters in the five regions of Togo that winter sports are fun. On the long run, we wish to be present in World Championships and Olympic Games in all FIS Olympic disciplines. Among our future plans is not only the successful participation in the competitions but also to build a sustainable winter sports infrastructure in Togo with a specific emphasis on youth and humanitarian work.”
